Design of the 2023 1/20 Ounce Gold Maple Leaf
The 1/20 ounce 2023 gold Maple Leaf coin features the same design that has appeared on the coin since its release in 1979. The front of each coin features a portrait image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. At the bottom of the coin are its face value of 1 Canadian Dollar, and its year of minting, which is 2023. The top of the coin says 'Elizabeth II'. Due to the Queen's passing in 2022, the 2023 issue gold Maple Leaf coin is the final coin that will feature Her Majesty's portrait. In 2024, the portrait on the coin is scheduled to be updated to King Charles III.
The reverse side of the coin features an image of a Maple Leaf, the official symbol of Canada. The top of the coin features the word 'Canada'. To the left and the right of the leaf are the coin's purity of 9999. At the bottom of hte coin are its weight of 1/20 ounce, and the words 'Fine gold' written in both English and French, the two official languages of Canada.
What is the Canadian Maple Leaf Series?
The Canadian Maple Leaf Series is Canada's official bullion coin series. The series was first launched by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979 in order to compete with the Krugerrand. In 1979, more than 3 million Krugerrands were sold annually. The Maple Leaf series has quickly become one of the most renowned and recognised bullion coin series in the world. The gold Canadian Maple Leaf is available in sizes ranging from 1/20 ounce to 1 ounce, however a maple gram card, which consists of 25 x 1 gram gold Maple Leaf coins, is also available. Following on from the success of the gold Maple Leaf, the silver and platinum Maple Leaf were released in 1988, and in 2005 a palladium Maple Leaf was released. Though additional security features have been added over time, the design of the coin has remained the same since its first release in 1979.
