What is Pegasus?
The Pegasus, an immortal winged horse usually represented as white, is one of the most iconic symbols from Greek mythology. From artists to writers, the divine creature has sparked inspiration for centuries. In archaic Greek mythology, Pegasus is conceived as the offspring of Poseidon, the god of seas, and the gorgon Medusa. The divine horse emerged from the neck of Medusa after her beheading by the hero Perseus.
Despite its wild and free nature, the winged stallion was tamed by the mortal hero Bellerophon, who, aided by Pegasus, won numerous battles. Overcome by arrogance, Bellerophon deemed mortals unworthy of his presence and attempted to ascend to Mount Olympus to dwell among the gods. However, Zeus, enraged by Bellerophon's hubris, struck him down, leading to his death. Pegasus continued its journey to the skies, where Zeus stabled it and named a constellation after it, a name that remains to this day. The name Pegasus originates from the Greek word "pegae," meaning "springs," reflecting the mythical horse's ability to create water springs wherever its hoof struck.
About Saint Helena
Despite its modest size and remote location, Saint Helena holds a significant place in global trade history. Covering just 47 square miles, this island served as a crucial port for explorers and conquerors, including the Dutch, Portuguese, and English. The British claimed the island in 1658, transforming it into a fortress and a central hub for profitable expeditions to India, China, and beyond.
Today, the trading center accounts for half of the world's trade, monopolizing commodities like cotton, silk, salt, spices, and tea, significantly contributing to the enormous wealth of the British Empire. As a key player in the British Empire's ascendency, Saint Helena remains a British colony, testifying to its remarkable history and influence.
