50 Peso Mexican gold bullion coins - 37.5 grams
Mixed year coins.
About the 50 Peso Gold Coin
First issued in 1921 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mexico's independence from Spain, the Mexican 50 Peso Gold Coin is also known as the "Centenario."
Each coin contains 37.5 grams of gold and was produced by the Mexican Mint.
These coins have not been issued continuously, with minting occuring from 1921 until 1931, in 1943, and then from 1949 until 1972. While there are a significant number of Peso coins in circulation, original minting of the coins was relatively low. Therefore, these coins sometimes carry a slightly higher resale value if issued before 1931.
Design of the 50 Peso Gold Coin
The front of the coin features an image of "The Angel of Independence", or "Winged Victory". She holds a laurel wreath in her right hand, and in her left are broken chains. The background of the 50 Peso gold coin depicts several of Mexico's most famous volcanoes. On either side of the image are the words '50 Pesos' and '37.5 Gr. Oro Puro'. At the bottom is the coin's year of minting.
The reverse of the coin features the Mexican coat of arms, with an Eagle standing above a cactus, holding a serpent in its beak. The words 'Estados Unidox Mexicanos' are inscribed around the top of the image.
About the Mexican Mint
The Mexican Mint is responsible for issuing all Mexican coins in addition to their bullion coins. There are two main bullion coins issued by the Mexican Mint - these are the Peso coin, which is only available in gold, and the Libertad coin, which is available in gold and silver. It is interesting to note that the 50 Peso design was later used for the Libertad series of coins in both gold and silver. The Libertad coin is still produced annually, while the Peso series ceased production in 2009.
The Mexican Mint is the oldest continuously operating mint in the Americas, and one of the oldest in the world. It was established in 1535, under decree from Spain, and was initially tasked with processing gold and silver that was discovered in the region. Today, the Mint manufactures all coinage for the Government of Mexico, and its largest client is the Bank of Mexico.
