Design of the ¼ Ounce Gold Eagle Coin
The American Eagle coin was first released in 1986, but was redesigned in 2021. 2023 marks the third year of the coin’s release with its new image. The front of each coin features a depiction of Lady Liberty walking with the sun rising behind her. She carries an olive branch in one hand and a torch in the other. The coin is encircled with fifty stars representing the 50 states, and the word ‘Liberty’ is inscribed at the top of the coin. Towards the bottom, the coin’s year of minting can be seen.
The reverse side of the coin features a newly designed image of the face of a Bald Eagle. The Bald Eagle is the national symbol of the USA. The top of the coin says ‘United States of America’, followed by the phrases ‘E pluribus unum’, and ‘In god we trust’. At the bottom of the coins is its purity and its legal tender value, which is $10 USD. ‘E pluribus unum’ is a Latin phrase meant to represent the concept of democracy, meaning ‘From many there is one’.
About the American Eagle Coin Series
The American Eagle coin series was launched in 1986 in response to the growing demand for investment bullion coins. The late 1970s saw huge demand for the Krugerrand, however, their sale was curtailed significantly by Apartheid in 1980. The American Eagle, along with the Maple Leaf, were launched in the 1980s to fill the gap in the market left by the Krugerrand’s restrictions.
One unique feature of the American Eagle coins is that they are required to be minted using gold that has been mined in the United States.
The series is released annually in gold, silver, and platinum. Palladium Eagle coins have also been produced, although they are not released as frequently or on a regular schedule. Gold American Eagle coins are available in 1 ounce, ½ ounce, ¼ ounce and 1/10 ounce sizes.
In addition to the American Eagle coin, the US Mint also manufactures the American Buffalo gold coin. This coin is only available in a 1 ounce size, and is 9999 fine. The US Mint is responsible for manufacturing all American coinage in addition to its precious metals coins. The US Mint is one of the few mints worldwide that does not issue a bullion bar.
