About the South African Krugerrand Coin
The South African Krugerrand is produced by the Rand Refinery in South Africa and is one of the most popular gold bullion coins in circulation. The coin was initially issued in 1967, and by 1980 was the primary gold coin in circulation world-wide, accounting for over 90% of gold coins sold. In fact, in 1979 more than 3 million Krugerrands were minted and sold worldwide. Starting around 1980, worldwide sales of Krugerrands were curtailed due to Apartheid, which dramatically affected sales. However, the coin was still sold, and despite this has been able to retain its position as one of the world's leading gold coins in terms of annual sales.
The Krugerrand was initially introduced in South Africa as a way for private individuals to be able to own gold. The coin also acted as a way for the government of South Africa to be able to monetize its gold production.
Design of the Gold Krugerrand Coin
The front of the Krugerrand coin features and image of Paul Kruger, a prominent South African politician, and president of the country from 1883 - 1900. The words 'South Africa' are inscribed around his profile in both English and Afrikaans, the two official languages of the nation.
The reverse of the coin features an image of a springbok Antelope, with the coin's weight, fineness and year of mintage on it. The Krugerrand was first issued in 1967, so coins supplied may be from any year since then. At the base, the words 'Fine Gold' are also written in both English and Afrikaans.
The Krugerrand gold coin has a slight copper tone. This is because the coin is mixed with some copper alloy in order to make it more durable.
Other Coins Issued By the Rand Refinery
In addition to the 1 Ounce sized Krugerrand, the South African gold coin comes in 1/10 Ounce, 1/4 Ounce and 1/2 Ounce sizes. In 2017 the Rand Refinery also introduced a
one ounce silver Krugerrand and a one ounce platinum Krugerrand coin. The Krugerrand series is not available in palladium. This is the only coin series issued by the Rand Refinery, however, it remains one of the world's favorite.
The gold Krugerrand coin is one of the most popular gold coins available in the precious metals market today, due to its low premium and recognisability worldwide. For individuals looking to invest in gold coins, the Krugerrand is recommended.
