Design of the ¼ Ounce 2022 Gold Krugerrand

The Krugerrand coin features a similar design each year, and the design has remained the same since the coin was first launched in 1967. The front of each coin features an image of Paul Kruger, South Africa’s first and only president. To the left and right of his portrait, the words ‘South ‘Africa’ and ‘Sud-Afrika’ are written, in English and Africaans respectively. These are the two official languages of the country. The reverse side side of each coin features an image of a Springbok, which is a type of antelope, jumping. The word Krugerrand features on this side. The coin’s size of ¼ ounce and year of minting, 2022, also feature on the coin.

About the Krugerrand Series.

The Krugerrand coin is currently available in gold in 4 sizes – 1/10 ounce, ¼ ounce, ½ ounce and 1 ounce. The coin is also available in silver and platinum. The coin was originally released in gold only, and was also only available as a 1 ounce coin. At this time, South Africa was looking for a way to monetize its gold refining, and physical precious metals investing was growing in popularity, particularly in the United States. The coins were launched in 1967, and just over a decade later, more than 3,000,000 were sold annually. In fact, the Krugerrand was so popular in the late 1970s that it accounted for 90% of bullion coin sales. Apartheid decreased the popularity and availability of the Krugerrand, and slowly, other coins such as the Maple Leaf and American Eagle, grew to take some of the market share from the Krugerrand.
