Design of the Gold Britannia 1/2 Ounce Coin

The 1/2 Ounce Britannia gold coin features an image of the British Royal Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II on the front. Around her image are the words "Elizabeth II' and the coin's face value, which is £50 pounds sterling. On the reverse side of the coin is an image of Lady Britannia standing and looking over her right shoulder. She carries a trident in one hand and a shield in the other. Around the coin are written the word 'Britannia', the coin's year of minting, and the coin's purity which is 999.9 fine. 

About the Britannia Coin Series

The British Britannia series was first released in 1987 as a gold coin only. Later on, both a silver and a platinum Britannia coin were also released. The coin is manufactured by the Royal Mint, the official mint of the United Kingdom. The Royal Mint also manufactures the gold Sovereign coin, Britain's oldest gold bullion coin that has been manufactured for more than 200 years. The Britannia is the main 1-ounce gold coin that is minted by the Royal Mint, although they also issue a number of other special edition gold coins.
