About the 20 Franc Gold Rooster
The French Rooster gold coin is a gold bullion coin that was produced in France from 1899 until 1914. The coins are the most popular gold coins issued by France, and were minted at the Paris Mint, or Monnaie de Paris.
The 20 Franc coins are 21 mm in diameter, weigh 6.45 grams and at 90% pure, contain .1845 ounces or 5.801 grams of pure gold. The coin's purity of 90% was the standard purity used on government issued gold coins at the beginning of the 20th century.
The coin has been designed to honour the history and democracy of France. As the coins ceased production in 1914, all available coins are in circulated condition.
The French Marianne, or Rooster, is available in varying sizes, including a 10 Franc and a 20 Franc coin. The most popular sized Rooster is the 20 Franc gold coin. In addition to the French Rooster, France also produces the Napoleon coin, which is a similar size and also has a face value of 20 Francs.
The gold Marianne coin is one of a number of European gold coins that were produced in the 1800s or early 1900s. The European coins generally have a weight of 5 grams to 8 grams, instead of today's 1 ounce denominations. Examples include the the French Rooster, the French Napoleon, the Danish Kroner and the Italian gold Lire. In fact, the issuance of these coins formed the foundation for the first unified European currency concept.
