Design of the Platinum Philharmonic Coin
The Platinum Philharmonic coin was first released by the Austrian Mint in 2017, making 2024 its seventh year of production. The coin features the same design as the gold and silver philharmonic coins. The front of each coin features a number of instruments used by the world-famous Vienna Philharmonic. The top of each coin says 'Wiener Philharmoniker'. The reverse side of the platinum Philharmonic features an image of the grand organ in Vienna's famous concert hall. The top of each coin says 'Republik Osterreich'. At the bottom of the coin are its size, fineness, year of minting, and face value.
Each 1 Ounce Platinum Philharmonic coin has a legal tender value of €100, which means that the coin is guaranteed by the Austrian government to that value. The coin is currently only available in a 1 Ounce size. All platinum Philharmonics are 999.5 fine.
History of the Philharmonic Coin Series
The Philharmonic coin series was first launched in 1989 by the Austrian Mint. The coin, along with the British Britannia gold coin, were the two main gold bullion coins to be issued by member states of the European Union. At this time Britannias were denominated in Pounds Sterling, and Philharmonic coins were denominated in Schillings. However, in 2002, when Austria adopted the Euro as its main currency, the Philharmonic coin series was also updated to denote its face value in Euros. Almost 20 years later, in 2008, the Austrian Mint launched the Philharmonic coin in silver, and this was followed by the launch of a platinum coin in 2017.
Although popular worldwide, the Philharmonic series has remained the favorite of European investors since its inception. The Platinum Philharmonic coin is the only platinum coin to be denominated in Euros.
