The United States Mint
The US Mint first began issuing bullion coins in 1986, when the American Eagle coin was introduced in gold. The Eagle was later also introduced in silver, platinum and palladium. The American Buffalo coin was not introduced until 2006. Though initially offered in fractional sizes, today the Buffalo is only available as a 1 Ounce coin.
The American Buffalo gold coin was the first 24 karat (99.99 fine) gold bullion coin to be issued by the United States Mint. All American Eagle gold coins are 999 fine (or 22 karat).
Design of the Gold Buffalo Coin
The American Buffalo gold coin was designed by James Earle Fraser, and is a replica of the Indian Head nickel or Buffalo nickel, which was produced by the United States Mint from 1913 to 1938.
The front of the coin features a composite profile of three famous Indian Chiefs from separate tribes.
The reverse of the coin features the image of a buffalo. The Buffalo is believed to be 'Black Diamond', a famous American Bison that lived in the Central Park Zoo in New York City in the 1910s.
The American Buffalo gold bullion coin is available in 1 Ounce size. The American Buffalo is currently only available from the US Mint in gold bullion.
